The month of July is observed as the national mental health awareness month and is usually marked by special events around the country.
This year there was march at the Durban beachfront on the 2nd. This was organized by the KZN Mental Health Advocacy Group based at King Dinuzulu Hospital, Durban. BMF joined other organizations involved with mental health in the march from the amphitheatre to King Shaka Marine. The march took place in the morning on a Saturday with many people milling about taking their weekend constitution along the beach.
Besides organizations associated with mental health, officals from the departments of health both local and regional were also present.
The BMF team included staff, volunteers, some clients and their carers. We provided trasport to and from Durban and many of the clients treated this as a day out at the beachfront. All members of the party were handed a goodie bag and a medal for participating in the march.
Despite poor weather, the turn out was good. Participants kept spirits up and managed to spread the message to people visiting the beach that morning.
Nodumo and her team met with Drs Ramlall, Eriksson and Mthethwa as well as visit other stalls to learn about other organizations working in mental health.
